Playful learning is often the most successful in engaging our children and allowing them to practise and experiment with their knowledge without fear of “getting it wrong”. It’s easy for us to dismiss some family games without realising the benefits of them to our children (as well as being great for family relationships! You could play ‘Charades’, ‘Pictionary’, ‘Hangman’ or ‘Categories’. Even a feely bag that we might have dismissed as a pre-school activity, can be useful in creating expanded noun phrases and exploring adjectives!
Talking to and with our children is one of the most important things we can do to support their English in our day to day lives. Role play with the DUPLO, talking about their day, describing the weather, identifying trees, retelling a story, discussing their Lego creations - all extend their vocabulary and build on skills they need to succeed in their writing.
The language children hear and use forms the foundation for their reading and writing.
Understand spelling patterns and exceptions, enhance vocabulary and be able to use grammatical terminology and feature it in their writing.
There are PDF resources available to support your children outside of tutoring sessions here. If the required year group is not yet available please get in touch and I can work on creating one.
There are also online game sites you may find useful to engage your children in practising English knowledge and skills:
